Don't Throw Away Those CDs!!! (The Sequel)

Since my original article "Don't Throw Away Those CDs!!!" was so popular, I have been compelled to write this sequel. I hope you find these suggestions equally useful.

WINDOW TREATMENT (For A Teen’s Room Or Recreation Room):

Drill two holes in each CD (one positioned at 10:00 and the other at 2:00) big enough for a ribbon to pass through. Thread a pretty ribbon through the holes, making a knot at each hole so the CDs won’t slip and bunch together. Place over the curtain and tie the ribbon ends to the curtain rod.

MIRROR EMBELLISHMENT:

Take a plain mirror and hot glue or epoxy the CDs to the frame. You can either overlap the CDs or position them side-by-side. Add other embellishments such as imitation gems (craft stores carry them with sticky backs) for a truly glitzy look.

PARTY GAME:

Take an old, large box and use paint or markers to make a clown’s face. Cut a hole in the mouth. The winner is the one who gets the most CDs through the mouth by throwing them as Frisbees. Of course, this can be adapted to any party theme. Another variation would be to cut 3 holes of different sizes in the box and award points to each hole. The largest hole could be worth 5 points, the middle hole worth 10, and the smallest hole worth 15. The winner is the one who gets the most points. Of course, this game needs to be supervised, as a stray CD could result in injury.

ROOM BORDER:

Use double-stick tape to stick them up as a border on the walls near the ceiling.

DECORATIVE FINISH:

Spray the print side of the CD with primer and let dry. Spray with granite, chalkboard, or other fancy spray.

PROJECT BASE:

Use on your crafts to make a flat base for roly-poly objects. Just insert the CD inside the stuffed snowman or doll, or secure inside a sack purse so that your project will not wobble, but stand upright.

LAMPSHADE:

For a truly unique look, (1) apply CDs to a white or off-white lampshade temporarily with sticky tack. (2) Trace the hole of each CD onto the lampshade. (3) Remove the CDs and paint the entire lampshade (except for the circles you traced) with black, gold, or another color of acrylic paint. Spray lightly with spray sealer. (4) When it is dry, glue the CDs on (lining up the holes you didn’t paint with the holes on the CDs) with either hot glue or Goop. Now, when you turn on the lamp, light will shine out the bottom and top of the shade, as well as through the holes of the CDs.
