Clay Votive Holder
This is one of those
projects that can be as easy or hard as you want it to be. It is
up to you. My only recommendation is that you do not cover the
whole glass votive with the clay, as the heat from the candle
flame could cause it to crack. If you do it in an open pattern as
pictured above, then there is enough area for the heat to escape.
Materials:
- Fimo, Sculpey, or
similar baking clay
- Small juice glass or
glass votive holder
- Oven
Procedure:
- Roll out the clay on
a protected surface (such as a table covered with foil).
If you want to flatten the clay, I would recommend using
a 1 inch dowel. Never use a rolling pin that you need for
food as the clay contains lead.
- Press onto the glass
forming a weave or lattice (XXX) pattern. Make sure that
the clay makes good contact with not only the glass, but
other pieces of clay. Don't forget to make a band at the
top and bottom of the glass to secure the clay.
- Add small clay
embellishments such as ladybugs, dragonflies, bees, and
flowers. Make sure that whatever you add does not exceed
1/4 inch thickness, as this could affect baking time.
- Place votive in cold
oven. Turn on heat and bake in the oven for 10 minutes at
275 degrees. Turn off heat and crack oven door open.
Remove votive when cool. **When baking, you may wish to
crack open your windows as there could be fumes from the
clay.
