Spoolie Scarecrow

This scarecrow can be hung on a peg on a shelf, or used to adorn any autumn display or wreath.

Materials:

Procedure:

  1. Cut material to fit on spools: 4 small spools and the one large spool for the shirt, 4 small spools for the slacks. If you want a more rustic appearance, fray the sides of the material. Glue on the spools with tacky glue.
  2. Cut the twine 3 feet long. Fold in half and knot, leaving a 2” loop at the top.
  3. Thread the round bead through both strands of twine.
  4. Taking one strand, thread two smaller shirt spools (arms) onto it. With the end of the same strand, make it go over the last bead and through the hole of the first bead. The end of the twine should now be back at the “neck.” Do the same for the other strand of twine.
  5. Take both strands of twine and thread them through the large spool (body).
  6. Thread one strand of twine onto two small spools (legs). Make a large loose knot at the end. Trim off excess twine. Glue the knot so it won’t come undone and spool won’t come off.
  7. Repeat for the other leg.
  8. Cut small pieces of raffia and glue to inside of the spools for hands, feet, and hair.
  9. Spray head lightly with spray sealer. When dry, add facial features.

***Spray sealer is put on the wood so that the marker will not ‘bleed’ onto the wood. Paint may be substituted if desired.
