Victorian Sachet
O.K. So you have made your own handmade
paper (or bought some at the store) and are tired of making the
usual note cards and bookmarkers. You long for something special
and different. These sachets, which I saw in an expensive
catalog, were originally made of linen. Now they have been
adapted for paper. They can make a wonderful gift by itself, or
in a gift basket filled with note cards or candles that you have
also made.
Materials:
- A sheet
of handmade paper
- Cinnamon
stick
- Hook-and-loop
tape (Velcros generic term- found in craft stores
and department stores craft sections)
- Twine
- Dried
berries, seed pods, sticks, lace, or anything else you
have on hand and wish to embellish the sachet with
- Dried
granular fragrance used in simmering potpourri pots
- Hot glue
- Fancy
scissors (optional)
Procedure:
- Make a pattern as pictured above: 8 ½x 4 ¼
with 3 ¼ between the base and first fold line, and
3 ¼ between the first fold line and second fold
line.
- Trace the pattern on the paper and cut it out with either
regular scissors or fancy scissors.
- Fold the paper following the fold lines on the pattern
and glue the sides of the paper together, forming a
pocket.
- Fold the flap over the pocket. Cut the hook-and-loop tape
to approximately ½. Glue one side of the tape to
the flap, and the other to the outside of the pocket,
ensuring that they make good contact. This will make it
easy to refill the sachet.
- Embellish the sachet as desired. Just make sure you lay
out the ornaments before gluing to make sure that you
will be happy with the result. The example above is
simply decorated with a twine-wrapped twig and dried
berries.
- Tie a length of twine to each end of the cinnamon stick.
- Fill the sachet with the dried fragrance granules, insert
the cinnamon stick under the flap and close.
