3-D Cornstalk
This project is good for grades
3 and up. Not only can this method be used with cornstalks, but
also Christmas trees, hearts, or any design, depending on the
season.
Materials:
- Yellow, orange, and green construction paper
- Burlap or twine
- Straw or raffia
- Tacky glue
Procedure:
- For the
pattern: Draw half of a basic cornstalk on the scrap
paper, making sure that the base is flat and the center
of the cornstalk is on the edge of the paper (figure 1).
Your cornstalk can be whatever size you wish. Cut it out.

- Fold the
yellow construction in half. Trace 4 cornstalks onto the
paper, ensuring that the middle (flat) side of the
cornstalk is on the fold. Cut them out.
- Unfold
your cornstalks to a 90 degree angle (L-shaped), glue
them together half of one cornstalk glued to half
of another and so on so that when completed, the
four cornstalks form one complete cornstalk (+-shaped
when viewed from above).
- Glue
straw (or raffia) to the cornstalk
- Cut a
strip of burlap (or twine) and secure around the middle
of the cornstalk with glue.
- Cut
pumpkins out of the orange construction paper and the
stems out of the green paper and glue to the cornstalk.
**Step #6 may be
done before or after applying the straw. This is totally up to
the child.
