Popsicle Stick Flag

This is a simple flag for either adults or older children (grades 6 and up) to make. Younger children can paint the sticks with the parent doing the wiring.

Materials:

Procedure:

  1. Paint 4 sticks red and 3 sticks white.
  2. Lay out the sticks, as they should be for a flag. Let dry.
  3. Paint a field of blue on the top 4 sticks.
  4. After the blue paint is dry, dip the end of the paintbrush in the white paint and use this to make the white stars. Let dry.
  5. Spray with spray varnish. Let completely dry.
  6. Cut two pieces of wire, each 12” long.
  7. At one end of bottom stick, fold one wire in half. Give it a couple of twists. At the other end of the stick, fold the other wire in half. Give it a couple of twists.
  8. Add the next stick, twisting the wires a couple of times to secure the stick.
  9. Repeat for all the sticks.
  10. At the end, twist the wires a couple of times to secure the last stick, trim wire and fold to the back.
  11. Cut a length of wire about 10 inches long, and secure to each end of the flag using your needle nose pliers.
  12. Add a drop of hot glue to the back of each stick where the wire is to secure firmly and make sure that it doesn’t slip out.

~The flag stripes can be moved closer or further apart. It all depends on the number of twists you give the wire in between sticks.

~~For a more rustic look, sand the sticks before applying the varnish.
