Popsicle Stick Flag
This is a simple flag for
either adults or older children (grades 6 and up) to make.
Younger children can paint the sticks with the parent doing the
wiring.
Materials:
- 7 Popsicle sticks
- Wire
- Acrylic Paint
- Spray varnish
- Hot glue
- Needle nose pliers
- Wire cutters
Procedure:
- Paint 4 sticks red and 3 sticks white.
- Lay out the sticks, as they should be for a flag. Let dry.
- Paint a field of blue on the top 4 sticks.
- After the blue paint is dry, dip the end of the
paintbrush in the white paint and use this to make the
white stars. Let dry.
- Spray with spray varnish. Let completely dry.
- Cut two pieces of wire, each 12 long.
- At one end of bottom stick, fold one wire in half. Give
it a couple of twists. At the other end of the stick,
fold the other wire in half. Give it a couple of twists.
- Add the next stick, twisting the wires a couple of times
to secure the stick.
- Repeat for all the sticks.
- At the end, twist the wires a couple of times to secure
the last stick, trim wire and fold to the back.
- Cut a length of wire about 10 inches long, and secure to
each end of the flag using your needle nose pliers.
- Add a drop of hot glue to the back of each stick where
the wire is to secure firmly and make sure that it doesnt
slip out.
~The flag stripes can be moved closer or
further apart. It all depends on the number of twists you give
the wire in between sticks.
~~For a more rustic look, sand the sticks
before applying the varnish.
