Dimensional Paper Art

There are some wonderful things you can do with paper. Here are two projects that are not your usual cut-and-paste variety.

Spring Flowers

Materials:

  • Tacky glue

  • Construction paper

  • Chenille stems

  • Scissors

Procedure:

  1. Take two chenille stems and cut them in half. Wrap them around a pencil to form a spring. Remove from the pencil and glue the springs to a sheet of construction paper, leaving space for the flowers that will sit on top.
  2. Draw two flowers, about the same size, in two different colors of construction paper. Cut them out and glue them together at the center, making sure the petals of the lower flower shows through. Curl up the edges of the top flower.
  3. Cut out a circle for the center and glue to the flower. Glue the whole flower to the top of the ‘spring.’ Repeat for the rest of the flowers until all the springs have flowers on them.
  4. Draw and cut out leaves. Glue to background sheet of construction paper, placing them beside the flowers.

Ring Picture

Materials:
  • Construction paper
  • White glue
  • Scissors

Bird, sun, flower, and grass

Procedure:

  1. Cut a series of strips from the construction paper ½” wide. Cut these strips to about 4” long. (Adults might want to do this step for younger children)
  2. Glue the strips into construction paper rings.
  3. Pinch ends of rings to make flowers, leaves, etc. Leave the rings round for animal bodies, the sun, and other round objects. Adjust length of strips if desired, cutting them shorter for smaller things, and leaving them long (or gluing smaller pieces together) for larger items.
  4. Glue these pieces to a sheet of construction paper.
  5. The object is to get children to be creative. As long as the rings are standing up, pretty much anything goes. As you can see by the picture, my daughter really enjoyed this project!
