Magazine Pencil
Cup
This fun project I remember
doing while I was a 3rd grader. As I rolled up the
tubes of magazine paper, it was always a mystery to see what part
would be left showing when I was all done. The tightness of the
rolls make the pencil cup long-lasting. In fact, my mother still
has hers after 30 years. This is recommended for grades 3 and up.
Materials:
- Vegetable can; washed out and dried; label left on
- Old magazines
- Scissors
- New pencil
- Glue
- Ribbon
Procedure:
- Cut out a rectangle on a scrap sheet of paper as wide as
the can is tall, and about 6 inches long.
- Now, looking for colorful pictures (it doesnt
matter what the subject matter is
all you are going
to really see is the color) use the scrap sheet of paper
as a pattern and place it over a page in a magazine,
trace and cut. If you get a lot of words in that section,
just try to get as much of the picture as you can. Cut 20
pieces to start with. You can always cut more as needed.
- Take one of your cut sheets of paper and place it before
you picture side down and short side in front of you.
Place your pencil at the edge of the paper and roll up
the paper around the pencil like so:
Try to
keep it tight, but not too tight. When you reach the end,
put a thin bead of glue on the paper to secure in place
and carefully pull the pencil out. Continue for the other
sheets of paper.
- Place a bead of glue along the edge of the rolled tube
and glue it to the can.
- Add ribbon or stickers if desired.
