Sammy Snake

This project is good for grades 1 – 4. Younger children will need help tying the knots and covering the cores. For a more memorable experience, include a short lesson on snakes, along with a lesson on safety. Encourage the child to color the snake to look like their favorite. My students enjoyed playing with their snakes almost as much as they enjoyed making them. I hope your child/children will enjoy this project as well.

Materials:

Procedure:

  1. If your cores are brown, cover them with white paper or construction paper. If they are white, this step is not necessary.
  2. Using the hole punch, punch two holes at the end of the first segment (opposite each other), two holes at each end of the middle segment, and two holes at one end of the last segment.
  3. Cut 4 strands of yarn 5” long. Thread one strand through a hole in the first segment and a hole in the second segment. Tie. Thread the second strand through the other hole in the first segment and the corresponding hole in the second segment. Tie. Join the second segment to the third segment in the same manner.
  4. Color the snake.
  5. Cut a tongue out of the red construction paper and glue in the ‘mouth.’
