Bath Salts

This is a fun project for the children to help you with.

Materials:

Procedure:

  1. Wash and thoroughly dry jars.

  2. In one large bowl combine: 1 bag Epsom Salts, 3 cups Kosher salt, 15 drops essential oil of choice, and 1/2 tsp. glycerin. Mix well with wire whisk. Have the children take turns stirring to show off their muscles. :) You are done mixing when all the beads of oil and glycerin are gone.

  3. In the other bowl combine: 1 bag Epsom Salts, 3 cups Kosher salt, food coloring as desired, 15 drops of same flavor essential oil, and 1/2 tsp. glycerin. Mix well with wire whisk. If color isn't dark enough, add more food coloring. Mix until all beads of oil, glycerin, and food color are gone.

  4. Now for the fun! Using one spoon for each bowel, layer the salts in the jars. You can layer them flat or at an angle. Insert the bamboo skewer into the jar against the glass through the layers to make stripes, as you would for sand art. Place the lid on the jar.

  5. Cut a round piece of material with pinking shears or standard scissors about 1 1/2" larger around than the canning ring. Place the material over the lid. Secure in place by screwing the canning ring over the material. Cut a piece of raffia and tie around jar ring.

  6. Cut a tag out of cardstock and, with the gel pens or marker, label it with the flavor of bath salts, and to use 2-3 tablespoons for each bath. Tie to jar with raffia.

You will probably have enough left over to fill two more jars. Picking up some antique jars at yard sales would not only be economical (I recently saw some for $.25), but would also make the gift extra-special.

If the children are making this for Grandma or other family members, write down what you want to appear on the tag on a scrap piece of paper and have the children copy it onto the tag. The child-like handwriting will make this gift most endearing.
