Garden Tips
In
this section, I would like to give you some helpful
general gardening tips that I have learned along the way.
I am by no means an expert, but I would like to help you
as much as I can by sharing what I know.
The
following is a potpourri of short, general tips.
Enjoy!
MUMS:
For best results, plant mums in the spring. Here in
Michigan, they are plentiful in the garden centers in the
fall, but they are sold mostly as perennials. If you do
plant mums in the fall and want them to have the best
chance to make it through the winter, be sure to mulch
with plenty of straw.
STRAW:
I like to get a bale of straw in the fall and heap it
around the base of my roses. This protects them some from
the bitter cold and helps them to get through the winter.
Then in the spring when it starts to warm up, I scatter
the straw in my vegetable garden and roto-till it into
the soil.
LEAVES:
It has been awhile since I have thrown leaves out. In the
fall, I scatter the leaves over the vegetable garden and
turn it into the soil. Then in the spring, it is tilled
into the soil with the straw.
EVERGREEN
BRANCHES: Save old Christmas tree
branches to protect your plants in the winter. Use the
old Christmas tree in your back yard in the winter as
shelter for the birds. You can string berries or popcorn
on it for bird food. Some types of birds would appreciate
orange slice or peanut butter covered pinecone "ornaments."
